It is official, my trip that I am planning at the end of the month from NJ to FL and back is a go! Now, its definitely not going to be one of those straight shot, 16 hour each way ride down 95. I have about 9-10 days total for the trip so I will be sure to enjoy my way there and back. See below for my maps of the journey that I have put together so far!

So in total it is just over 3100 miles. On average in terms of driving days only, it is around 7 hours of driving each day (little more on some and less on others). That is more than doable especially since I have things planned to do along the way to get out and hike a little bit. Notable roads I plan to hit include Skyline drive (VA), Hwy 165 (TN), Tail of the dragon 129 (NC-TN), HWY 441 (TN), and Blue Ridge Parkway (TN-NC-VA). Plans are still flexible right now since I havent booked any of the lodging going north yet. If any oppos are along the way going north, or would like to join for parts of the drive, let me know!

Car: 2001 Mazda miata with 131k miles and a luggage rack. Should be great!

May I suggest taking Highway 90 from Tallahassee on. It takes a little bit longer, but there are some neat little towns in between there and Pensacola, while I10 is just pine trees.

Sounds like a blast! I'm in Asheville btw and I would suggest detouring up Mt Mitchell. Hell of a hill climb driving up "The Devil's Whip" and awesome hiking/camping at the summit. I did a short article on it check it out here .

If you hit Florida on the weekend you'll be ready for this awesome sauce!

Also, our Orlando Roaster's meet is on the 20th. We usually get 30+ in attendance.

Those look like a lot of fun. I will be with my girlfriend in Disney World on the 25th and 26th. She flies out around 3pm on the 26th and then I am off to Mobile on the 27th. So I wont be able to make those but I wish my plans worked out so that I could!

Oh yeah, I will definitely check that out. I planned on stopping in Asheville on my way north for the night. Hopefully I get there with some daylight left though so I could head up that mountain for a bit. I would actually camp every night along the way but there is no way I could make enough room in my Miata for bringing all the gear. Only downside of having my Miata for the trip lol.

I read through your post, and that place definitely sounds awesome! I will be riding up the Blue Ridge Parkway the whole day after Asheville as well. Im hoping I can fit that in for sure!

I have all day to make it from Orlando to Mobile, so detours are more than welcome! I will definitely do that. Google maps wont let me make any further alterations so I may have to make separate maps to plan it out more.

There are a couple of places to see along the way, like Lake Defuniak(It's in the middle of a town, it's just neat to see) and Ponce De Leon Springs. Also if you go through Milton, FL, there is an awesome little bakery here with kickass donuts, right on 90. While there aren't too many places to stop, 90 is a much more scenic route. It's one of the few roads I don't mind driving here in Florida.

excellent, all of heard of florida is that the roads are boring or dangerous (due to old people, meth heads, and tourists). Glad to know I can find a road worth driving on my way out of the state!

I should be pulling into Asheville Thursday April 30th and I would definitely be down for a Miata cruise on the Devils Whip on Friday May 1st if you are available! I will probably divert from Asheville down to the 70, then follow the 80 North until I hit BRP and then continue my way north from there. Definitely would be worth the detour.

This is outside of the beach zone, so it's mainly retiree free. Plus it's pretty rural, so most traffic is avoided. Strangely most of the weird of Florida is in town, and not in the rural areas. People out there are pretty friendly and normal.

Yeah 80 is def a cool drive! Before I can commit to a drive like that, there are a few things I need to fix on my Miata. If I can sort everything out by then I may be up for a drive up there... It is over an hour from me, but I wouldn't mind doing that and then camping at Mitchell again while I'm up there! And The Devils Whip would def be a good test for the state of repairs!

We will have to keep in touch, and as it gets closer I will know if I can make it up there on May first!

Sounds good. I'm going either way haha, but yes it would definitely be more fun with another miata to ride along with! I've got an extra day in my itinerary so I would definitely be down to use it for camping. I won't be able to bring much in terms of supplies but I can definitely make it work. Let me know and feel free to email me at rduncan5678@gmail.com if you end up being able to make it!

If you're down in the Kissimmee area you should make a point to stop by Redline Autoports my man Esteban has every part imaginable if you needed to pick something up. One of his friends recently did a video about his cool as hell half trailer. If you're looking to tear it up one day in town just let me know.

77/81 is a great interstate alternative. It is a fun drive, with some mountainy stuff. Avoid 95 at all costs.

If you can, skip Birmingham and cut through Talladega National Forest. Good drive!

That's going to be a great trip. I drove from Atlanta to Plattsburgh, NY and back in mine a couple years ago in this set up:

that seems like a really great setup. Only problem for me would be that the trailer wouldn't be so great to pull around through the twisties. But it would definitely work well for a camping trip or something where I have a base camp to leave the trailer at. what kind of trailer and hitch do you use?
